gaston did a lot of damage around richmond, virginia about six years ago. remember, they do recycle the names. it's not a new name every year. if it's not a damaging storm that caused a lot of damage and a lot of deaths they just reuse the name rather than retire it. earl, though, may be one of the things that we're going to have to get rid of. an e storm here. very large. we had a wind gust. for a while we had a plane that was kind of flying through it, one of those hurricane hunter aircraft, flew through it, put down basically a weather balloon, although it wasn't a balloon, it was on a parachute because it's already in the sky. so as it falls through it found a wind gust of 199 miles per hour. not at the surface. a couple thousand feet up. but it still counts. it's still a wind gust. so as this storm continues to try to turn away from the shore, boy, we sure hope that that happens in the overnight hours. still, the 5:00 update here still has it offshore. the 11:00 update will be coming on soon. you can always go to cnn.com/hurricane for the very latest.
